Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. Matthew 16:24
Following after God is no walk in the park. We get talked about, misunderstood, used, the devil and his minions are always attacking, and often times we get outcast-ed for our belief. It’s even worst when you have the wrong perspective on things- this walk can begin to be a burden on you. You start to loose the joy of your salvation. You can become a pessimist! A person no one wants to be around.
But let me encourage you through the writings of Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:7-11 that says “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
Paul was acquainted very well with discouragements, attacks, betrayals, problems on every side, yet his stance was to see things with an eternal outcome. He chose the hard walk in life in order to gain eternity! When Jesus invited us to follow him, did you take time to count the cost? Do you take time now to meditate daily and ask yourself, if you are still willing to climb that cold mountain, to reach the top? Jesus asks us to give up our own way, take up our cross (responsibility, burdens, trouble, faults, etc.) and obey Him.
Let me tell you that what we go through here on earth, IS the price we are paying for being Jesus’s disciples. To hold on no matter how big the giant we face is. Or how painful it is to hold on and have faith, when all you want to do is to let go. This walk is certainly not for the faint of heart. It is for courageous people who have decided to go against popular opinion, and live a free life. A life free from the reign of sin in their lives.
Following Jesus, is the hard walk! But boy do we get the best view! We get to see Jesus face to face. We get to partake in His divine nature. We get to live our best life now, through our Creator!
