What ever happened to Modesty?

Parents need to teach their children to dress modestly! In the world, we are living in where many believers act more like enemies of the cross. Where “Judge not”, “God only looks at the heart”, and “let’s not be legalistic”, seem to be the only bible verse that many have memorized to make excuses for their lifestyles.  It’s sad to see how many churches don’t even teach about Modesty. It’s sad to see how our churches are filled with ministers both young and old, men and women, get up on the pulpit dressed in mini-skirts, very tight revealing clothes, cropped shirts, Low cut shirts with cleavage showing, and the list goes on, in an effort to be “cool” and be “accepted’ by a culture that hates and rejects the very Christ, they claim to be preaching. The Holy Spirit says

“Women should adorn themselves modestly and appropriately and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with elaborate hair arrangement or gold or pearls or expensive clothing,”

(1 Timothy 2:9 )

We need to adorn ourselves with clothes that reflect our professions as followers of a Holy God! With clothes that do not draw attention to us but gives glory to God. Now let me clarify that I am not talking about women wearing only dresses and skirts past their knees, and men should only wear slacks and button-down t-shirts. What I am saying, is that the style of clothing that is out there, speak to this generation that is so saturated and enslaved with sex, lasciviousness, and sensuality, that as believers we should be tastefully, intentionally and appropriately choosing the clothes we buy, for ourselves and our kids.

You might say, “But I am connecting with this generation, they are tired of the Business suit Christianity, I wanna be real and authentic!” To this I will respond, is the power of God in your life not powerful enough to bring others to Him? Since when did Jesus become a crooked tax collector to bring Matthew to himself? Brothers and Sisters, we are in this world; we are not of this world (1 John 2:15-17). There must be a distinction between unbelievers and believers in every which way! We cannot continue to live half for the flesh and half for Jesus. That’s what 5 foolish virgins did, and when the Husband came (Jesus), they didn’t have enough oil in their lamps and heard the most dreadful thing. Jesus tells them” I do not know you”.  But why did Jesus respond like this? Didn’t they love Jesus and preached His word and the world loved them and accepted them as their own? Yes! But the foolish virgins had one foot in and the other foot out (Matthew 25:1-13). Brothers and sisters the Holy Spirit clearly says that in the last days, many shall depart from the faith, giving heeds to seductive spirits (1 Tim 4), funny how it never says they will fall away from the church. They will fall away from the faith! And you might say, but falling away from the faith, doesn’t that mean that they will no longer profess that Jesus is Lord? No! Read carefully the parable of the 10 virgins, the foolish ones confessed that Jesus is Lord. They were in church, raised their hands during praise and worship, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, gave conferences, debated other non-believers, they were Evangelist, Missionaries, Prophets, Apostal’s and Pastors. Yet… Their lamps had a slow leak, where the oil kept spilling out.  They had fallen away from the faith, giving heed (devoting themselves) to seducing spirits and things taught by demons. Meaning, they made the cross of no effect! They couldn’t live to the standard of the gospel, so they settled for the easy way. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, let’s live for ourselves because all is good.

The issue of Modesty goes beyond the clothes, as it reflects the heart.

Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:23

We should be diligent in being involved in all aspects of our kids’ lives. We should know what our kids are watching, listening to, and reading, as these things influence the hearts of our kids.

We must teach the next generation that Modesty in still beautiful in God’s eyes. We should be burdened with what we are seeing in today’s world, how being half-naked and seductive is normal and being marketed as so-called “freedom”. We must teach our kids to crucify the flesh with its passions and lust (Galatians 5:24) and live a crucified life.

  1. It seems in these times we would prioritize focusing on Matthew 25:35-45. Seems so much more urgent than preaching and finger pointing about modesty.

    1. Hello Kate! Thank you for your comment. We should be prioritizing the whole bible. Modesty is a topic many people hate to preach about, yet its found in scriptures. The urgent message in God’s word is to repent and be holy! To separate ourselves completely from the world and its standard. Be blessed, sister!
