The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. Proverbs 21:5
Why is it important to set family goals? Because it will be your guide for the year, as to what you want to see accomplished in your family’s spiritual life. You will have the opportunity as a family to sit down and talk about what will be your main focus this year. It will hold everyone accountable to each other, and it will prove to be an encouragement and lesson that we are all responsible for our spiritual life, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”, Philippians 2:12
Below are some points, to help you better organize this journey.
Be realistic- When setting goals we start out with great enthusiasm. We have the attitude of “the world is ours”!!! But then a month passes and we are beating ourselves up because we soon come to realize that our goal was unrealistic. Take some time and meditate about where God wants to lead your family. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you and reveal to you what He would like to see accomplished this year for your household. Set goals that are age-appropriate and be sure to talk about and write out how each one of you will do there part in making sure this goal is conquered!
Be diligent- When times get tough, the tough get going. There will come a time in this process that you will want to give up. Don’t! Proverbs 22:29 – “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before men.” One of our problems as humans is that we want to see things accomplished right away. We do not have the patience to wait. When the time comes that you feel the family is heading in another path, gently lead them back to the goal with the staff, by going back and reviewing the family’s mission. Encourage yourself and your family, and keep moving!
Be flexible– It is okay if you go back and change a few things, because guess what, it just isn’t working out for your family, maybe your goal needs some adjustments or you simply feel the Holy Spirit is leading your family in another direction. Do not be rigid in your thinking! Allow God to have full control of your family’s life, and allow Him access to add or change things that He would like. Psalms 16:9 “The heart of man plans his ways, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
Setting family goals will stop us as parents from being hasty in our planning. It will remind us that whatever we set out to accomplish, will take time. It will bring your family closer together and it will set the path for your children to always want to grow into maturity and intimacy with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Enjoy the journey and don’t forget to laugh and enjoy yourselves in the process. After all, life is good!
