Word Study- Snare

Snare: Bird trap, of calamities, plots, source or agent of calamity, trap, to plot, a net,

Strong’s H6341- pach

Snare: A (metallic) Sheet (pounded thin); also a spring net( spread out like lamina) thin plate, noose

Strong’s H6351- pach

A snare sets itself up undetected. When a person sets up a snare, the purpose of it is to trap, kill, hold back, and/or deter a person from fulfilling the future God has for them. Take Pharoah for example. Pharaoh was holding back God’s people from serving Him in the wilderness, and this brought calamity throughout his Kingdom.

And Pharaoh’s servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed

Exodus 10:7

Another great example of this, are the covenants that we make with ourselves and others. Any kind of agreement we make that compromises our relationship with the father. Case in point were when the Israelites, always fell for the seduction of the idols around them. It weakened and enslaved them, and became a trap that they couldn’t escape, until they repented and turned to God. The people of Isreal, just like us play games with sin and idols, not realizing that it is only a matter of time before we completely turn ourselves over to its destruction.

Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:

Exodus 32:12

And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

Psalms 106:36

Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.

Lamentations 3:47

Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a snare, and like a bird from the trap of the fowler.

Proverbs 6:5

Lastly, the biggest snare to our soul that comes from the inside out, is seduction, lust, and sensuality. The bible says that we are enticed to sin when we are dragged away by our own evil desire, James 1:14. In the book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes the spirit of Seduction is strongly warned about as a trap that leads to hell.

Suddenly he went after her like an ox that goes to the slaughter, like a stag prancing into a trapper’s snare, Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

Proverbs 7:22-23

I discovered this: More bitter than death is the kind of woman who is like a hunter’s snare; her heart is like a hunter’s net and her hands are like prison chains. The man who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is captured by her.

Ecclesiastes 7:26

This is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong.

Proverbs 30:20

For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it. Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity to one who is cruel, lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another. At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!

Proverbs 3

Below, are many other examples of the word snare:

Exodus 39:3 – He made gold thread by hammering out thin sheets of gold (snare) and cutting it into fine strands. With great skill and care, he worked it into the fine linen with the blue, purple, and scarlet thread.

Numbers 16:38 – Take the incense burners of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and hammer the metal into a thin sheet (snare) to overlay the altar. Since these burners were used in the LORD’s presence, they have become holy. Let them serve as a warning to the people of Israel.”

Job 18:9 – A trap (net)grabs them by the heel. Asnare (noose) holds them tight.

Joshua 23:13 – then know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive them out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare (net) and a trap (metallic sheet, pounded thin) to you, a whip for your backs and thorny brambles in your eyes, and you will vanish from this good land the LORD your God has given you.

Psalms 91:3 – For he will rescue you from every trap (source or agent of calamity) and protect you from deadly disease.

Psalms 119:110 – The wicked have set their traps (plot) for me, but I will not turn from your commandments.

Psalms 141:9 – Keep me from the traps (plot) they have set for me, from the snares (calamities) of those who do wrong.

Proverbs 7:23 – awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart. He was like a bird flying into a snare(bird trap), little knowing it would cost him his life.

Isaiah 24:18 – Those who flee in terror will fall into a trap (net), and those who escape the trap (net) will be caught in a snare (calamities). Destruction falls like rain from the heavens; the foundations of the earth shake.

Hosea 9:8 – “Hear this, you priests. Pay attention, you leaders of Israel. Listen, you members of the royal family. Judgment has been handed down against you. For you have led the people into a snare (trap) by worshiping the idols at Mizpah and Tabor.
