What Ever Happened To Discretion?

Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions.

Proverbs 18:2

What in the world is happening to believers now a days!!!! Believers have found it okay, to reveal their whole lives (the good and the bad) on whatever platform is available to them. All in the name of being able to identify with this culture. Many without even realizing it, have emptied the power of the Cross by their foolish statements and silly post that instead of bringing conviction to the hearts of the people, they keep them in their sin.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers

Ephesians 4:29

In the Bible, especially the book of Proverbs, there are countless of versus that make the contrast between the fool and the prudent. A fool is someone who doesn’t think before they speak and or act. A fool can be compared to a silly person, a person with no common sense. The foolish are not interested in understanding (comprehending the real state of things), they are only interested in voicing their opinions. A prudent person is a wise person. A prudent person is someone who has discernment, correct judgement of things, and DISCRETION.

The word discretion means, the quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid causing offense or revealing private information.

Men and women of God have lost the quality (the condition of being distinguished from others; nature or character relatively considered, as of goods; character; sort; rank) of being discrete, all in the name of progression! We went from a world where believers had clear boundaries of right and wrong, correct and error, to today- where believers are confused as to what it really means to follow Jesus. We have gone from being respected and noticeably different from the people around us, to dressing, acting, speaking, singing, living, just like the people we are called to reach with the good news.

I don’t know about you, but I am sadden and down right angry with the condition of the church today (when I say Church, I am referring to the individual who claim to be born again). Why? If we scroll down our Social Media page, we can see how many “born-again” believers, have lost the desirable quality of being discrete. They have opted to use their platform to speak and post a bunch of foolishness, that corrupts and sends mixed messages to their unbelieving friends and family. NO wonder we haven’t been successful in reaching our families and friends with the Gospel. Our testimony (Posts) contradicts the word of God.

In everything set an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Titus 2:7-8

How can people take us seriously, when we speak about Hell in one post, then in another we post a picture with our chest out, butt back, duck lips, and seducing eyes. REALLY?! This is deception! This is foolishness, and speaks about the true condition of our hearts.

For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Luke 6

When we are not discrete, it shows that our hearts are contaminated with the world and has yet to be cleansed from worldliness. As a child of God, we are held at a higher standard. The words we speak, write, and think, show others who we belong to. When we are constantly trying to be like the people in the world, while claiming to be reaching the world, we make the cross of no effect to the many witnesses that are watching us. We must show by our words and actions that we fear God.

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

Psalm 19:14

Fellow believers, this is the time that we as believers must let our light shine. The light of the Gospel! But how can people see this light, if we are not thoughtful about what we say and post online? We simply cannot continue living this new life in the Lord, with our eyes still on the past. We have to move forward unto the promise land of a brand new life. The bible says that once we are in Christ Jesus, all things are made new. Jesus is inviting us to forsake our old ways once and for all, and follow his example of being discrete.

Who is the man or woman of God? He or she that walks in discretion.

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Matthew 12:36

Seest thou a man [that is] hasty in his words? [there is] more hope of a fool than of him.

Proverbs 29:20

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same [is] a perfect man, [and] able also to bridle the whole body.

James 3:2

The words of a wise man’s mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

Ecclesiastes 10:12

Conclusion

Discretion has and will always be desirable in the eyes of God. It is a quality that will never go out of style, just like modesty. I pray this blog has opened your eyes and you realize the urgent need for believers to rise up and shake the dust off our old life, and live a life of discretion.

  1. Very good so that it even convicted me of thinking of my words before I speak. Been pondering the 1st 2 verses in your blog for a long time before now. And here they are again. I think the Lord is telling me something. To listen and obey everything within my power and ask Jesus and The Holy Spirit to give me power and help in time of need.
